From the iconic image of a moose to the serenity of a pristine landscape – be it natural or urban – Canadiana seeks to examine and reimagine the intricate and evolving nature of considering oneself distinctly Canadian. - Open Windows: May 29 – June 4
Opening Reception: Thursday May 29th (7-11pm)
Exhibition Dates: May 29 – June 4, 2014
OPEN WINDOWS is an exhibition featuring the artworks of Karen Decker and Victoria Taylor from May 29th to June 4th at Project Gallery. The exhibition symbolizes a “time to open our windows to the arrival of spring and fresh colourful beginnings after the heaviness of winter is finally exhausted. As well as a figurative look through a ‘glass windows’ to a view of things, as we would like them to be.”Karen Decker My pieces are inspired by stain glass designs that I have encountered in Riverdale and across Toronto. My largest piece, titled “Our Main Street” is a stain glass window as imagined from the inside looking out onto the streetscape, looking out from 790 Logan Ave (24inches x 48 inches). Tumbled coloured glass, chandelier pieces and gloss gel mediums cradle the bold colours that made up a feeling of home base. Victoria Taylor Victoria Taylor is originally from New Brunswick and graduated with a Bachelor of fine Art from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University in 1992. Having lived in Toronto for the past 16 years it is now time to resume the art career she put on hold while devoting her full attention to raising 3 children. - FLUID: June 5 – July 2
Opening Reception: Thursday June 5th (7-11pm)
Exhibition Dates: June 5 – July 2, 2014FLUID showcases the work of bi* identified photographers in celebration of WorldPride 2014. Bi* includes those who claim, amongst other possibilities, the identities bisexual, queer, pansexual, asexual, omnisexual, two-spirit, fluid or other non-exclusively straight or non-exclusively gay identities. Artists from the United States, Germany, Argentina, Canada, and Hungary are represented. The show asks participating artists to respond to their sense of their own sexuality. What does it mean to be fluid? Are identities necessarily on a spectrum, from straight to gay, or can they exist somewhere outside of that linear model? Are they transformative, in flux, moving or liquid? Does bisexuality rupture dominant narratives, both queer and straight, and in what ways? Is bisexuality naturally destabilizing, and what might that look like? How do individuals move in and out of identities, desires, labels and spaces? How do other intersections, for instance race, gender, class, ability, and personal history intersect with bi* or fluid identities?Featuring Artworks by:Allicette Torres, Amanda Robertson-Hebert, Angela Yukiko Shintani, Catherine Jones, Gymnos Alithea, Jaene Castrillon, Jenni, Jim Riley, Joyce, Kati Holland, Kristy Boyce, Melissa Wilkinson, Michael Mills, Sarah Thomson, and Shannon LillOpening Reception: Thursday June 5th (7-11pm) Exhibition Dates: June 5 – July 2, 2014 FLUID showcases the work of bi* identified photographers in celebration of WorldPride 2014.
