“Collage is the noble conquest of the irrational, the coupling of two realities, irreconcilable in appearance, upon a plane which apparently does not suit them.” — Max Ernst
Cut and Paste is a contemporary group exhibition hosted by Project Gallery which features emerging, established and local artists working in a variety of media including: painting, video, digital media, sculpture, mixed media, and photography. The show features works that embody the aesthetic of collage and related compositional elements. Works featured in Cut and Paste conceptually deal with assemblage, pastiche and the appropriation of different styles of design. Works are not limited to physical ‘cut and paste,’ rather the artists embrace the critical understanding that may be born out of the juxtaposition, manipulation and compilation of various isolated forms.
Cut and Paste aims to explore the aesthetic value of recontextualizing visual components in a transformative way. The show investigates the results and understandings created when seemingly unrelated elements are purposefully combining into one work. Project Gallery hopes to invite questioning regarding the alternate or contrasting discourses that are produced when such elements unite.
